Quilombo Trek weaves experiential tourism, ecotourism and adventure trekking with the living memory of the quilombola communities of Rio de Contas, in the Chapada Diamantina.
Quilombo Trek is a 5-day, 4-night expedition through the quilombola territory of Rio de Contas, in the Chapada Diamantina, combining adventure tourism, ecotourism and community-based travel. The journey takes you through waterfalls and trails, hands-on family farming, Capoeira Angola practice and knowledge circles with the elders of the Quilombola communities — an authentic journey through nature, ancestry and resistance.
Day 1:
Morning - City tour of Rio de Contas.
Afternoon - Visit to the Public Archive featuring a workshop on the history, stories and legends of Rio de Contas.
Day 2:
Morning - Visit to the Quilombola Community of Barra.
Afternoon - Visit to the Quilombola Community of Bananal. Evening - Ancestral storytelling circle around the bonfire at the Quilombola Community of Barra.
Day 3:
Morning/Afternoon - Community immersion with hands-on family farming — planting and harvesting — followed by craft workshops and traditional cooking classes. Evening - Bonfire night and communal celebration.
Day 4:
Full Day Hike - Morning/Afternoon. A full day immersed in adventure tourism: a 5-hour intermediate-level trail featuring canyoning through rivers, natural pools and waterfalls at Mocotó, Lavra Velha and Cristais. A complete ecotourism experience discovering the diverse biomes of the Chapada Diamantina — Cerrado, Caatinga and Atlantic Forest. Late Afternoon - Camp setup. * On this day we camp at a beautiful, well-equipped ranch with a wood-fired kitchen and a stunning riverside beach to enjoy the starlit night high in the mountains.
Day 5:
Morning - Capoeira Angola training session. Afternoon - Visit to the historic town of Arapiranga and return to Rio de Contas. Late Afternoon - Farewell ceremony at the Quilombola Communities of Barra.
